TAILOR MADE MATERIALS

Gone are the days of patio paving being bog-standard slices of concrete in boring beige, grotty grey or puce pink. These gorgeous porcelain slabs from Pavestone mimic the best natural flooring products you could ask for, yet they’re super-durable, easy to maintain and will make your patio the envy of everyone next summer—so you get the best of both worlds. You can create the same look as natural stone but in a low-maintenance, algae-resistant, non-slip, easy to lay product which doesn’t fade or deteriorate, whatever the weather. Even better, with Pavestone’s porcelain range, all the edges are manufactured completely square, ensuring perfectly even joints.

Furthermore, you can mimic the appearance of wooden decking but with a material which is quick to lay, won’t rot, need treating or scrubbing, won’t get damp and swell or split in summer. It’s perfectly possible when that look is beautifully created from textured porcelain slabs which have to be seen to be believed!

A really important safety feature of these porcelain slabs is the non-slip finish, which ensures a secure footing in wet weather but doesn’t detract in any way from the premium look of your finished paving. This is so important if young children, older relatives or pets are going to get year-round enjoyment from your outdoor space – it’s one less worry, thanks to Pavestone!

DIY DESIGNS

If you’re looking to do the work yourself, it’s important to know how to lay porcelain slabs – which differs slightly from laying a stone or concrete product. The base preparation may be the same, but there are a few details which will ensure your patio is perfect.

  • Dig out, make the sub-base up and plate compact the area to 50mm below the finished height – use pegs and string a line to show the finished level.

  • Paint the underside of each slab with Pavestone slurry primer, just before laying, as porcelain has lower porosity than concrete products, so needs priming first for good adhesion. Make sure to clean spills off the surface of the tiles immediately, as primer won’t be removable once dry.

  • Create a firm mortar bed for each individual slab, from a standard slabbing mortar, and ripple the surface to help the slabs bed in.

  • Lay each slab carefully, using a spirit level to check it’s just right – use a rubber mallet to very gently tamp down any high spots and use spacers or pieces of 6mm ply to keep the joints fine and even.

  • Allow the slabs to dry for at least 24 hours before walking on them – cover with hessian sheeting if the weather may be chilly overnight.

  • Point up with Pavestone flexible grout in your choice of colour – there are so many to choose from!

  • Once the grout is completely dry, give the slabs a wash to remove any residual dust and make them really look their best.

  • Use gravel and plants to soften the edges of your new patio, then add pots of herbs and some stylish garden furniture to complete the masterpiece!
