Dry Fell Walling

Dry Fell Walling

Dry stone walls provide attractive boundaries with character and appeal and are becoming ever more popular with home owners and property developers. As well as being a highly desirable asset in any prestigious garden project, dry stone walling has strong environmental values.

Although initial construction is costlier than fencing or man made brickwork, with regular maintenance dry stone walls can endure centuries. Dry stone walling also provides a natural habitat for animals, birds, insects and plants.

Pavestone Dry Fell walling is suitable for traditional restoration projects, barn conversions, sympathetic new house builds as well as contemporary developments.

Walling structures are constructed without mortar to bind them together.

Retaining Walls

When creating retaining walls, with Pavestone Dry Fell Stack Walling, it is recommended that the retaining wall is built from a structural walling block such as a dense concrete block.

Backfill:

Backfill behind the wall with a Type 1 MOT material to ensure good drainage.

Compact the backfill periodically to provide additional stability.

Once the retaining wall has been built it can be faced with Dry Stack walling as a facade faux wall.

Decorative walls

Decorative walls made with Pavestone Dry Fell Stack Walling should be no more than 1.5m in height. Installing a dry stack stone wall can be a straightforward process if you follow these simple steps. Dry stack means that the stones are stacked without the use of mortar, relying on their natural interlocking properties for stability.

Materials Needed:

Dry Fell Stack Walling Stones:

Gravel: For the base and backfill.

Landscape Fabric: To prevent weeds from growing through the wall.

Wooden Stakes and String: For layout and alignment.

Hand Tamper: To compact the base.

Level: To ensure the wall is straight.

Rubber Mallet: For adjusting and tapping stones into place.

Instructions:

Plan and Layout:

Mark the layout of your wall using wooden stakes and string. Ensure it follows the desired contour and is level.

Prepare the Base:

Clear the area of grass, weeds, and debris.

Dig a trench about 150mm deep for the base of the wall.

Add a general sub base (GSB) blinding off with a layer of sand and use a hand tamper to compact it.

Install Landscape Fabric:

Lay landscape fabric along the trench to prevent weeds from growing through the wall.

Begin Stacking:

Start at one end and place the largest stones at the base.

Fit stones together like a puzzle, ensuring a tight fit.

Stagger the joints for stability.

Maintain Level:

Regularly check the level to ensure the wall stays straight and level.

Adjust the stones as needed by tapping them into place with a rubber mallet.

Build in Layers:

Add layers of stones, stepping back to assess the overall stability and appearance.

Place smaller stones toward the top for a more finished look.

Finish the Top:

Cap the wall with flat stones for a finished appearance.

Ensure the top layer is level.

Final Checks:

Walk around the wall to check for stability and alignment.

Make any necessary adjustments.

Optional: Seal or Protect:

Consider applying a sealer to enhance the color of the stones and provide some protection.

Tip:

Work patiently and take your time to achieve a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing result.
